Why should I have a Back Garden farm?

There are many advantages to having your food grown for you. You know where it comes from, you know how it is grown and by who. You know it has not been sitting in a freeze dried warehouse for six months or been flown half way round the world. You get the enjoyment of your vegetable garden and lots of great tasting, nutritious seasonal produce with none of the work. It will also give you a connection with your local environment and a reconnection with the wonderful seasonal changes we are so lucky to have in the UK. There's always something to look forward to.

Why should I use raised beds?

Raised beds give several advantages over just digging straight into the ground. The soil warms more quickly in the spring sun giving your growing season a head start and gives you a higher yield. Because of the size, all parts of the bed are easily reachable, this means every square cm of soil can be used for growing, no paths, no waste. Becasuse the soil is screened it has no big stones, these have an impact when growing root crops like carrots, stones cause the roots to split giving you strange shapes that are hard to prepare. They are easy to constuct and we can put them almost anywhere, even on concrete. If you have mobility difficulties, we can build them to a height to suit you, Our products look good and will be an asset to any garden.

We are a school and don´t have funding for the project but would love to get involved – what ideas do you have?

We have lots of ideas. We have access to charitable grants. We like to build local connections and like to encourage your local business people to sponsor school packages. They get great PR and tax breaks, you get whatever you need.  We can also help you raise funds in school with "veg out" days. Children can pay to wear their own clothes for a day, the money raised can purchase a package or beds, we can install the beds on the day so students can see that what they are doing is helping ths school and if you like, one of our staff can run litttle workshops for classes through out the day. Please look at our school packs in the school section of the website, or contact us for more information.

CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE…
HELP THEM GROW!

Did you know that one in five children do not eat any fruit at all? Overall, kids eat about half the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetable per day. Well it´s not just Jamie Oliver that wants to make a difference!

At Back Garden Farm our aim is to work closely with children through schools and families.

Growing vegetables or fruit is not only educational, it is a wonderful way to spend time with your family. Having a vegetable or fruit bed at home helps ensure that your children are eating a fresh, healthy diet that they have watched grow from a tiny seed to the food on their plate!
